The experience of an "autistic" child

家長心聲When Tao Tao was about age three, Growth Monitoring and Development Surveillance was conducted by Maternal & Child Health Centres as scheduled. As a result, Tao Tao was diagnosed with autism. Moreover, his intelligence and language skills were lagging behind for as much as a year and a year a half respectively, in comparison with other children of the same age. Hence, the doctor suggested that Tao Tao be transferred from the regular school that he attended to a special school with related therapy.

We sank into deep despair over Tao Tao's case. But thankfully, with the help of the Church, Tao Tao's case was referred to educational psychologist Dr. Jane Nam for follow-up. After conducting a holistic assessment on 3-year-old Tao Tao, Dr. Jane Nam said warmly to me: "Paula, you may rest assured that, based on my experience, Tao Tao is not autistic. It is only because of his rich thinking ability that he is unable to express all his thoughts with his words, as a result of which his ability of speech seems to be lagging behind." Dr. Jane Nam's words brought a great deal of comfort and hope to me and my family, so I declined the doctor's suggestion of a school tranfer for Tao Tao, and accepted Dr. Jane Nam's offer of professional tailor-made training instead.

Tao Tao grew as the days went by, and with Dr. Jane Nam's professional training, his innate abilities in various areas also developed by degrees. In his studies, he lowly ranked 40th in a class of 60 when he was in Primary One, but rose to 16th in Primary Six. In September this year (2013), he successfully enrolled in a Band 1 English secondary school. Tao Tao has a wide range of interests: he loves to read, and has read profusely; he also likes to play chess, and has represented his school in inter-school wei chi competitions. In sports, Tao Tao also loves playing soccer, a group game.

Looking at Tao Tao today, I cannot imagine what would have happened to him if we had followed the doctor's advice and sent him to a special school, instead of accepting Dr. Jane Nam's professional assessment and tailor-made training.

Thank God for this timely assistance given to Tao Tao and my family. We hope that He would make good use of Dr. Jane Nam's professional knowledge and training skills to help more and more children in need and their parents.

Greetings from Tao Tao's mother
