A Whole Language Phonics Program
Introduction: To bridge the gap between more traditional visual language approach and more mechanical phonetic
approach, Reader Ship Literacy School offers a whole language phonics program that helps young children to start
their emergent reading experience and to develop their basic abilities in communicating in English.
The program involves:
- Letters-and-sounds: the 4 steps of story card reading, music and movement, vocabulary recognition and rhyme
reading focus children on acquiring the letter sounds.
- Alphabet/ Word Families Activities give step-by-step instructions on how to start basic communicative skills on
sounds and words.
- Meaning - Child must determine if what he/she has read makes sense in relation to a picture and in the
context of the book the child is reading.
- Visual - Child will use a letter in the initial position to read a word in context.
- Structure - Child must be able to hear what he/she has read and determine if it sounds right
grammatically.
- 1-to-1 Match - Child must understand that what he/she says has to match the number of words on a page.
This is a 4-level course of 12 lessons. The purpose of the program is to teach children letter-sounds and simple
communicative skills. Level 1 and 2 combine both letter-and-sounds and alphabet activities. Level 3 and 4 focus on
segmenting and blending of sounds whereas Level 4 further consolidates rime and onset blending.
